Tips on identifying and controlling German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are prevalent in the Unites States and are present worldwide. They contaminate spaces by spreading germs and bacteria.  The adult cockroaches are recognized by their tan color. They can also be light brown with two black horizontal stripes located behind their heads. They can grow up to 13-16mm in length. The young ones are almost black in color and have black stripes. In adult German cockroaches, wings are present, but they are rarely used to fly.
Habits, Diet, and Behavior
German cockroaches are commonly known to stay indoors in tropical environments. They prefer to remain in warmer, more humid areas. These cockroaches are usually found in bathrooms and kitchens, but can also move to different parts of the house where moisture and food are available.
German cockroaches can be introduced to residences when boxes and bags are brought into the house. Infestation can also occur through used appliances. In apartments, these insects use pipes and plumbing as a highway to move quickly from place to place.
They are scavengers and are capable of feeding on most food items. This includes soap, bindings of books and toothpaste. They have the ability to capitalize on even small amounts of food, like feeding on the dirty dishes left in the sink or crumbs missed out during cleaning.
Reproduction
German cockroaches are known to reproduce quickly. Female cockroaches will produce an average of 4 to 6 egg cases during their lifetimes. Each egg case contains  20 to 40 eggs. This case is carried by the female until 1 to 2 days before hatching. Depending on the conditions, it takes around 100 days to grow into an adult. After the German cockroaches become adults, they can survive for 100 to 200 days.
Prevention Methods To Control German Cockroaches
When you begin your German cockroaches control program, remember sanitation is one the first things to consider.
  • Clean any food particles or crumbs in your kitchen
  • Keep trash dumpsters clean
  • Vacuum and sweep any food particles
  • Keep dishes clean
  • Ensure that kitchen appliances are clean and free of grease or food
  • Frequently run the garbage disposal and make sure no food is left in sink strainers
  • Remove indoor trash and keep dustbins empty.
  • If you have pets, make sure all pet food crumbs are picked up
Chemical control
Baiting is an effective way to eliminate or control an infestation of German cockroaches . To protect your house from pests use Chemical pesticides containing hydra methylone, fipronil, or boric acid which provide a high-level of control. Apply these to areas where cockroaches have harbored. Use these on crevices of bureaus and cracks, ceiling light fixtures, hollow legs of chairs, shelves, and walls. If you have kids or pets at home, make sure they do not come in contact with these products. Remember to read the instructions on the labels before you use any of these.
The use of repellent sprays or aerosol foggers can also limit the infestation of German cockroaches.
Conclusion
Remember to always keep your environment clean and tidy, to avoid a cockroach infestation.  Take preventive measures as soon as possible to keep these pests at bay. Before using any chemical pesticides read and follow the instructions. Keep these away from children and pets. In case you cannot control them using these methods, it is best to call a professional pest controller.

Qualified Pest Control Advice is Gold

Contact Bob 0407 065 413 info@a1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au

The internet today can also be a curse…what do I mean? Ask any person that has self diagnosed their own condition on the internet and was sure that they would be moments from death, disregarding the fact that the diagnosis was general information not the gospel truth.

That is why you go to a doctor that has up to 9 years of study and he will personalize your consultation and give you treatment for your particular case.

Why do I say this? Its because we found live termites that were in the tree and the fences and wanted to treat these areas also place a barrier around the home to protect the home owner.

We were informed that that the neighbour had researched it and said that it was not necessary to put the barrier down.

The home owner said that besides the insurance would cover this which again is wrong information.

The well meaning neighbour advice is incorrect and the termites once chased out will be home less and the nearest place for them to go would be the home. They are looking for ideal environment which has a water supply in areas such as the bathroom, kitchen or laundry.

What insurance covers is getting damp areas repaired it does NOT cover termite damage. Please check your policies you are gambling with your biggest investment – your home.

Not to add scare tactics in 6-8 months time we have seen repair bills to a home costing upwards of $80,000 as they attack beams, doorway and windows.

Only listen to people that are a Pest Control expert or someone from the CSIRO that has a Entomology degree to give advice, do not rely on people that think they have a solution by looking on the internet as this bad advice will cost you money.

Spider Pest Control – Everyone Hates Spiders!

We get calls from all sorts of people that have creepy crawly problems and the one that makes people shudder is spiders.

There was a woman who saw a huge spider on her screen doors back and front that was holding her prisoner!

She was late to work as she had a fear that the spider would jump on her as she went through the door. It does not even help customers when we tell them that the spiders they describe is harmless and it helps to eat mosquitos …they just want them GONE.

Spiderlings are small baby spiders that are airborne and just attach to anywhere they fall mainly outside but can find their way indoors as well.

TOP SPIDER TIP AFTER TREATMENT:

When we come for the general pest treatment or attend spider call outs we will spray our treatment on webs what many people do is take a broom and get the web down this is WRONG.

Leave the web in place 3-4 weeks as other spiders will visit the web and the treatment will kill them as well.

There have been video’s on YouTube of people that are well meaning and get a ladder and container to trap the spider and they think that they will creep up on the spider to catch it – don’t forget many spiders have 6-8 eyes though and can keep an eye on you either through poor sight or vibration.

The video is funny to watch, as the person gets near to the spider container in hand above his head and nearly ready to capture it when the spider jumps on him!

He and the child who is video recording it scream the ladder falls over and no doubt the man may have even hurt himself. Don’t climb ladders or you could get hurt!

VIDEO A1 Pest Control Canberra – Termite Talk

Its strange what you come across in the pest control business – just when you have thought you have seen it all up pops something that you may have read about but not ever seen for yourself.

Did you know that termite King and Queen only fly once and that is to find where they will make their new colony. Once there the wings fall off the Queen’s whole purpose is to produce thousands upon thousands of termites daily.

How interesting is that!

Listen to the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZyrrinp6Fs&feature=youtu.be

The soldier termites go out and find the soft sap wood that they know that the Queen loves to eat and the termites build their mud tracks straight to the soft wood.

Only last week Bob and his team were called out to a property when they had cut the tree down in their backyard and did not grind the stump down. The family decorated the bare stump with gnomes and pot plants not knowing that there was a colony of termites busily eating away at the soft
wood.

The pest control team started their investigation and opened the stump to reveal not just one Queen but another 8 Queens – you see there is only one fertile Queen the others are her replacement should something happen to her, the soldiers are infertile and their job in life is to feed the Queen and to protect the colony.

Bob followed the mud tracks into the house silently eating away the door frames of the newly renovated bathroom.

Anyway, I hope you got to have a good look at the video and then get back to us if we can help you with a termite inspection either visual or with our T3i thermal imaging to ensure that we can identify if you have termites and if you have devise a plan on how to best treat the problem.

Discovers 9 Queen Termites

A1 Pest Control Canberra Discovers 9 Queen Termites!
http://needava.com

Today we sent the team out to Kambah for a termite inspection on a tree that was cut down last year and the stump had been decorated with gnomes.

We found the colony and in the royal chamber there were 9 Queen Termites. This will mean after the chase out we will be doing a barrier around the house to protect the home from the termites.

While the inspection was taking place the woman next door is also wanting a termite inspection. A lot of our days lately are on termites and advising courses of action to take.

FACTS ABOUT TERMITES.

1) there is only 1 Queen termite who’s main purpose is to lay up to approx 30,000 eggs per day! The other 8 we found today are to ensure the colony lives on should something happen to the Queen.

2) a Queen & King will only fly once and that is to find a place to start a new colony and then will shed their wings and never fly again.

3) a Queen termite can live up to 50 years of age in her lifetime lay 165 million eggs. The worker termites only live around a year but are easily replaced by the Queen.

4) worker termites are there to feed the Queen and find food sources for themselves.

5) The only way to successfully kill a termite colony is by killing the queen. She never leaves her chambers you have to find a way of getting to her.

Killing all the workers is not enough as she can quickly replace them.
